ABOUT ALCOHOL
The second major addiction is consumption of alcohol. It is a product of fermentation process. It is a process of breakdown of sugars by bacteria and yeast using a method of respiration without using oxygen. This is the principle process involved in production of bread; beer; wine; cheese; yoghurt; soy sauce etc. In baking and brewing, yeasts ferment sugars to produce ethanol and CO2. This ethanol is that found in beer and wine. It is a colourless liquid with a pleasant odour, miscible with water or ether; it burns in air with a pale blue flame.
The following are uses of ethanol:
The vapour of ethanol forms an explosive mixture with air and and used in high compression internal combustable engines.
It is used as a raw material for manufacture of ether, chloral and iodoform.
It can be added to petrol, where it improves the performance of engine
It is used as solvent for gums, resins, varnishes
To prepare oils in perfumery
It is used for preparing medical substance in pharmacy
95% ethanol is cleansing agent in labs and hospitals as it destroys microbes
Preparation of ethanol is done from absorption of ethane and subsequent reaction with water or by reduction of ethanal in the presence of catalyst.
Ethanol or ethyl alcohol, C2H5OH is a colourless liquid. It is the basis of all common intoxicants: wine, ciders, sherry. Malt liquors are beers and stouts in which the starch of a grain is converted into sugar by malting; sugar is then fermented into alcohol by yeast. Spirits are distilled from malted liquors or wine. This can contain about 55% of alcohol. All fermented liquids contain 20% of alcohol.
The above are the positive aspects in tobacco and alcohol
Now the negative aspects while it is consumed
